Past Dating Era Ozzie and Harriet

Ozzie & Harriet Era Gone

Online Dating 50 years after Ozzie and Harriet.
Ozzie and Harriet were the standard bearers for American families in the 1950s and early 1960s. 50 years after Ozzie and Harriet a large number of people are dating online and future predictions are that online dating will become a standard way to find love.

Online dating follows the gone era of Ozzie and Harriet. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet aired from 1952 to 1966. It was a reality show sitcom with the real life Nelson family. Dad, Ozzie Nelson and his wife, Harriet Nelson and their two sons, David Nelson and Ricky Nelson. They lived in the picket fence family neighborhood, “Thorny”. Keep in mind there was housing segregation in the 50s and minorities were not moving into, “Thorny”. The dad worked and the mom was a stay at home wife and mother. A house, two kids, one dog, one car, working dad and stay at home mom. The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, epitomized values and ideas of the American family in the 1950s. The sitcom was in black and white television until 1965. In the 1950s and early 1960s a woman single pasted 21 years of age could carry a stigma. In the 1960s America’s social climate was changing. Examples: Viet Nam war, the war protest, Civil Rights movement, the birth control pill, women seeking employment outside of the home, women seeking higher education, man going to the moon and etc. The show was not able to keep up with the changing social values ended in 1966.

Ozzie and Harriet children and the children of that era were the Golden Baby Boomers. Baby Boomer tended not to conforms to old traditions and that included dating and marriage. The first official online dating site was registered in 1994-1995. In 1996, there were 16 online dating sites. In 1998 the movie, “You’ve Got Mail” starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan gave online dating a huge cultural boost. Prior to online dating and current today are personal newspaper ads, locals with similar interest meeting at city or church oriented locations.

The stigma of dating online is swiftly changing. Old stigma, online dating means you are desperate. That notion is ridiculous this is not the Ozzie and Harriet era. Technology has changed dating methods and finding friends methods. Approximately 20% of people are meeting mates online. In 2002 Myspace introduced “social networking”. Social networking has a multitude of proposes, social networking, business network, advertising, finding a mate or friend. Despite social networking site: Myspace, Facebook and Twitter in 2007 in the USA approximately $500,000,000.00 was spent on dating online. Online dating web revenue is second only to pornography. In general, people are still finding mates through traditional means. Online dating sites are being credited with people meeting dates and or friends. Online dating is not a passing fad but here to stay. Future estimates are that technology will become a major component or tool for people seeking love.

Niche sites or category dating is thriving. In niche dating concentration into a group or groups examples: single dating, single parent dating, senior dating , Black dating, Latin dating, Asian dating, Interracial dating, Gay dating, pet lovers, executive dating, date a cowboy, big and beautiful women, green dating, local dating, national dating, international dating, casual dating and serious dating. The lists for niche dating is extensive and a big dating time saver.

Online dating is not going anywhere and is here to stay. Technology has combined and enhanced old methods of matchmaking. Ozzie and Harriet were great in the 50s but socially dating and marriage ideals have changed and ushered in a new dating era.

Before Online Dating Liz and Burton

Liz and Burton Love and Marriage

Liz and Burton Before Online Dating

All is fair in love and war. The couple that comes to mind is Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Before Angela and Brad there was Liz and Burton. Theirs was not a traditional marriage but they were not ordinary traditional people. They were beautiful movie stars. In Hollywood you judge affairs in dog years.

Elizabeth Taylor (1932- 2011) duet citizen of England and USA. Married eight times having seven husbands. In my opinion her greatest love was Richard Burton. She married Burton twice. Richard Burton (1925-1984) born working class, Neath Port, Wales. He was the twelfth of thirteen children. In the 1940s he worked on stage and cinema in England. In the late 1940s critics claimed, “acting fire, manly bearing and good looks.” Burton’s first wife was a fellow actor Sybil Williams. They married in 1949 they had two children. He first met Elizabeth Taylor at a party. She was pregnant and then married to Michael Todd. Taylor’s second husband.

In l963 the production of Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor. Richard Burton replaced Stephen Boyd as Mark Anthony. Up until that time Twentieth Century Fox’s Cleopatra was the most expensive film ever made and running over budget. Cleopatra was cut from six hours to four hours and was a box office success. Burton’s role as Mark Anthony paved the road to Burton’s success in Hollywood as a leading man. He remained among top 10 box-office earners for the next several years. Elizabeth Taylor was already Hollywood Royalty and a top box office earner.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton fell in love during the production of Cleopatra. There was one small problem they were both married to other people. Burton was married to his first wife, Sybil Williams. Elizabeth Taylor was married to her fourth husband Eddie Fisher. They both divorced there respective spouses and married in 1964. The Vatican condemned their affair as “erotic vagrancy”. Before Angela and Brad there was Liz and Burton. The press had a never ending curiosity about their affair and marriage. Why not? Elizabeth Taylor was one of the most beautiful women in the world and one of the world most famous actresses. Richard Burton was hard drinking with a ruddy complexion. His voice was golden in a very manly Shakespearean way. Burton had alpha male presences. At the time, they were two of the most famous people in Hollywood. When they looked at each other there was fiery love and passion in their eyes. Burton lavished Elizabeth with jewelry. Famous were 33.19 carat Krupp Diamond and pear-shaped 69.42 carat Taylor-Burton Diamond. With all of the love, passion, comfort and beauty after a ten year of marriage they divorced in 1974.

Liz and Burton briefly remarried 1975 and divorced again in 1976. The public around the world could not get enough of Liz and Burton. Their affair made them top motion picture earners for several years. I question if the film, Cleopatra would have been so successful if Liz and Burton were not having a fiery romance on the set while married to other people.

Life is a roller coaster. During their affair and marriage the Burtons lived extravagantly all over the world, most beautiful couple in the world, and top Hollywood earners. It did not end well personally for them both after 1976. One of the many films the made together may a given an inside look into their marriage. Film made in 1966, ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Rumors, Richard Burton at one point or the other was supporting 42 family members. In 1976 Burton married Susan Hunt and ended in divorce in 1982. In 1983 Burton married his fourth wife Sally Hay. Richard Burton was a heavy drinker and smoker and died from a cerebral hemorrhage August 1984. In 1976 Elizabeth Taylor was no longer box office golden. She was famous for her beauty, marriages and passed movies. She founded a successful perfume company and AIDS foundation charities. She married two more times and divorced. She died March 2011.

It does not matter if you are rich or poor all people are seeking companionship and love.
We are all people with the same basic needs. Liz and Burton married in 1964 before online dating. They met at a party. Currently daters meet at parties, bars and work places. In the 21st century online dating has been added to matchmaking. In the internet age dating online has surged in popularity. The surge in online dating is because it works.

Dating and Love Through Time

Romantic Love and Dating Through Time

What is Romance? Mystery, Excitement and Pleasure associated with Love. Romance and love has changed since the caveman day’s of women being clubbed over the head and taken as a mate. In the Medieval days women were seen as properties and I feel that concept lasted until the mid twentieth century. Chivalry and romance did begin in Medieval times and has been modified over time. Online dating gives dater’s freedoms to seek romance by categories and internationally.
Romantic Love and Dating Through Time
In prehistoric times the leader of the pack was the alpha male. He was the strongest, loudest and leader of the pack. The caveman’s method of romance or wooing a woman was clubbing the woman and dragging her to his cave. In the cave the alpha-cave man would do what ever he wished with the cavewomen. There are no records of the woman’s feelings about wooing or romance. This kind of behavior was common and probably expected. You must realize prehistoric time was more than 10,000 years ago and women and men did not have the advantages or options they have today. Caveman and women tended to monogamous. The reason for monogamy was survival. Prehistoric men and women had to hunt for their food and food (meat, chicken, birds, vegetables, fruits, birds eggs, roots and seeds) were eaten raw. Caveman and women living conditions were dependent on seasons and were continually roam looking for food and shelter. Mating in prehistoric times provided security for the woman and increased production for the male. Prehistoric people roamed in small groups. Monogamy strengthens the society.
Medieval Times
In Medieval times romance was not what we see in the movie with Russell Crowe or Liam Nielson. In the country marriages could result from love. Noble classes viewed love and marriage as business transactions. Wives brought dowries and some instances alliances of two countries. Women were usually viewed as the male’s property. Moralist in the 11th and 12th century considered passion as sinful. Medieval romance idealized the noble knight and his noble deeds. Romance idealized High Adventure which was usually knights and nobles participating in religious crusades or wars.
Romance in Early Modern Europe
From the 15th century to 18th century was the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Events from 15th to 18th century invention of printing press, Christopher Columbus, beginning of Protestant Reform, discovery of the Americas, European colonization of the Americas, American Revolution and French Revolution. Elizabeth I reign (1558-1603) height of English literature and poetry. During Elizabethan Era William Shakespeare composed plays and poetry. Three themes for Shakespearean writings comedy, romance and history. Age of Reason or Age of Enlightenment in European philosophy. Romance differed by class. People in the villages had to be strongly approved by both parents. Villages could marry for love but considering very low living habits the male was seeking a hard working mate and someone that could bear children. In noble quarters marriages were arranged to enhance fortunes. The Church had a very strong influence and virginity was seen as the highest mortal award for any single woman.
